The Period of PURPLE Crying is the phrase used to describe the time in a baby’s life when they cry more than any other time. The PURPLE program provides education to help parents of new babies understand the normal crying curve and the dangers of shaking a baby.
The acronym PURPLE is used to describe specific characteristics in an infant’s crying during this phase and lets parents and caregivers know that what they’re experiencing is a normal part of their child’s development. The letters in PURPLE stand for:
P— Peak of crying
U— Unexpected
R— Resists soothing
P— Pain-like face
L— Long-lasting
E— Evening
